What is pagefile.sys?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Pagefile.sys<\/strong> is basically a page file Windows uses to store the data that can\u00b4t be held by your device\u00b4s memory when it\u00b4s full. Think of it as a tool that helps relieve<\/strong> load on the memory<\/strong> while running programs that take up a lot of processing power.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Although it\u00b4s very useful, the page file is usually misconceived<\/strong>. People think it\u00b4s the cause of slowdowns because your computer\u00b4s applications don\u00b4t care if they\u00b4re cached in your local RAM or the page file.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

And it is true, accessing the file page is considerably slower than the local RAM memory<\/strong><\/a>. If heavy quantities of data are passed to pagefile.sys, there can be huge performance loss<\/strong> on your computer\u00b4s side.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Moving the page file<\/strong> to an external source, may increase your system\u00b4s speed (still depends on your type of disc, what output it uses, what drive you use\u2026). Here\u00b4s how to do it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. Open advanced settings:<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Open the control panel search for advanced<\/strong>, then choose view advanced system settings<\/strong>. On the performance<\/strong> section then click settings.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new window should pop up, then press Advanced<\/strong> tab. Look for the Virtual memory <\/strong>section and click change<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Select external drive<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On the Virtual memory <\/strong>page, uncheck the Automatically manage paging file size of each drive <\/strong>option.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Then on the System manage file<\/strong> select No paging file <\/strong>and finally select the external drive that shows on your C drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Click Set <\/strong>button and after the warning message click Yes <\/strong>to proceed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

3. Restart the system<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

For these changes to make their effect, you\u00b4ll have to restart your Pc. This way windows will automatically delete the page file<\/strong> on your computer and create a new one on the external drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Another option you have on managing the storage space is to resize the pagefile.sys.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How to resize pagefile.sys<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Normally Windows autonomously<\/strong> manages the page file size. But if your hard drive space is low, you might want to put some limits (just remember it can lower performance). This is how to do it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

1. See memory usage<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

To check just how much memory your system is using, press Ctr + Alt + Del. This will give you access to Task manager.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Press on the performance <\/strong>tab and choose memory.<\/strong> Check the amount of storage in use to figure out how large you want the page file to be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

2. Go to advanced settings<\/h3>\n\n\n\n

On the Windows control panel type Advanced <\/strong>and choose view advanced system settings<\/strong>. Then on the performance <\/strong>section click settings.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A new window should open, press Advanced <\/strong>tab and look for virtual memory <\/strong>then press Change.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Virtual memory <\/strong>tab, uncheck Automatically manage paging file size of each driver. <\/strong>Press the Custom size <\/strong>option. Then just enter the minimum and maximum size you want the pagefile.sys<\/strong> to have.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How can I delete pagefile.sys?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you\u00b4re convinced you can operate your computer with no virtual memory because you have enough RAM<\/strong> to run your programs and still want to delete pagefile.sys<\/strong> then here\u00b4s how to do it:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

First you\u00b4ll have to set your virtual memory<\/strong> to zero using the resizing steps we showed earlier and then reboot<\/strong> your sistem. That way Windows will not use the file and will allow you to delete it<\/strong>. But keep in mind that pagefile.sys will return if you enable virtual memory again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final recommendation<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

If you ask us, modifying the file isn\u00b4t worth it. Unless you have a reason to adjust the virtual memory settings or your system can run without virtual memory, you should just let Windows manage the virtual memory via pagefile.sys<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
