What is SSD storage anyway?

One of the main components of a computer or server is its hard drive. It is responsible for storing our data, but not only that. With storage technology constantly evolving, new storage devices are becoming available, to the point of impacting server performance. The solid-state hard drive, or SSD, has become a key piece of modern computer hardware, but what is an SSD drive and how is it different from the HDD drives we used to know?

What is a hard drive?

A hard drive is the storage device where your computer or server stores all your data on a long-term basis. Everything you install or create on your computer or hosting space is stored on a hard drive. The operating system of your computer or server is also on the hard drive. Each hard drive has a certain capacity, or storage space, which determines the amount of data that can be stored. The capacity of these hard drives is measured in gigabytes and terabytes and defines the limit of data you can store on them.

Are there different types of hard drives?

There was a time when there was really only one type or hard drive that was commonly used, but this has changed a lot in recent years and there are now many storage options. The two most common forms of storage are HDD storage and SSD storage.

HDD storage

The HDD drive is the most traditional method of data storage. It has been around for more than 50 years and is still available and efficient. HDD drives use turntables to store data. The advantage of HDD drive is that they can provide large storage space, in the order of several terabytes. They are also more affordable than other storage options and are an excellent choice for storing large amounts of data. The disadvantage of HDD drives is that they are slower than other options. This is due to the use of mechanical parts and the way data is read and written. These mechanical parts also increase the probability of a hard drive failure, although this is rarer with newer drives.

SSD storage

SSD drives use flash memory to provide faster speeds than HDD drives. These drives have no moving parts, which means they are less prone to failures and interruptions. This is one of the main advantages over HDD drives. SSD drives therefore offer greater durability, but they are also much faster than HDD drives. In fact, these drives keep the data in a flash memory instead of a magnetic system like in a HDD drive. The SSD drive stores data using the reliable attributes of a durable semiconductor package. Therefore, because SSD drives do not depend on moving parts or rotating disks, the recovery speed of stored data is faster.

What is the best technology?

HDD and SSD drive are quite complementary. HDD drives will be more suitable for applications that require a lot of disk space, while SSD drives are more suitable for applications that require less disk space but require fast data recovery. In the case of a server, this speed translates into a website that is displayed faster for visitors. To take advantage of this performance, Obambu now offers Cloud SSD web hosting.

Obambu is changing, and launching its blog!

At the end of 2020 we have been busy launching a new version of Obambu, which had not been updated since 2016! On this occasion, we also launched the Obambu Blog, in order to keep in touch, and keep you updated about the latest news from the hosting and cloud industry.

Here is a small overview of what's new:

  • A new website

We have updated the Obambu website with a new logo and a new llok in order to facilitate access to our plans and provide more information about them.

  • A new customer area

The customer area had also not been changed for a few years now. So we redesigned both the order form and the product management area to update it and allow you to manage your products more easily.

  • New help documentation

We have launched Obambu Help (and its equivalent Obambu Aide in French) which is a knowledge base about our services. It will continue to be completed in order to provide the most exhaustive documentation possible, allowing you to find the answer to all your technical questions in just a few clicks.

  • New web hosting plans

The hosting plans are evolving, and the range is now divided between the Solo plans, which allow to host one website, and the Multisite plans, which allow, as its name indicates, to host several websites. It is still as simple as ever to switch from one plan to another, directly and instantly from the customer area.

  • New Cloud SSD hosting plans

One of the main new features of this new version is the launch of Cloud SSD plans. This is the first time that Obambu launches plans with SSD storage, which is much faster than traditional HDD storage. The resources of these plans, which offer unparalleled isolation and performance, have also been increased, both for RAM and CPU.

  • A new reseller hosting plan

Our reseller hosting plan is unique on the market. It is the first reseller plan on the market that allows you to pay only for what you use. A predefined number of cPanel accounts and disk space is provided, and beyond that, the customer is charged only for additional accounts and disk space used. With this innovative plan, the customer only pays for what he needs, without paying for a higher plan with unnecessary resources.

  • New email plans

For the first time, we are launching plans only for professional email hosting. So those who don't need a website but only to have professional email addresses (and avoid Gmail, Hotmail and other) will be able to enjoy a complete plan at the best price.

  • New domain name extensions

We have updated the list of extensions we offer, adding for example .io or .ru. And as before, we continue with the transparency of the renewal price: no bad news after the first year, the renewal price remains at the purchase price.

  • New VPS plans

Two ranges of VPS servers are now offered: Smart servers with OS LXC virtualization (which we already offered) and the new Power servers with KVM kernel virtualization. Thanks to the launch of this last range of VPS plans, our customers can now take advantage of Windows Server, as well as the possibility to install Docker, VirtualBox…

We hope that you will enjoy our new plans and the new customer area, and remain open to any comments or suggestions. Finally, we also take this opportunity to thank all our customers for their continued trust.
